Someday, this page will list all LP's I know about that were recorded and produced in the 1960's and 1970's by the late George F. Johnston of Oshkosh, WI variously under the names Century Records, Custom Records, Century Custom Recording Service, or just under his own name, George F. Johnston. It is unknown whether or not he had any employees, recording engineers, mixers, etc. The resulting recordings were manufactured by the Century Custom Recording Service ("Century Records Discography" by Robert Plante) of Saugus, CA. The only LP's I have seen with his name, and/or any of the above label names, all feature various church choirs, and grade school, high school, College and University choirs, bands and orchestras from Oshkosh and the surrounding area. As far as I know at this time, every recording he made was on location, and not in a studio.
According to his 1983 obituary in the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern, "Mr. Johnston was self-employed in music recording. He was a charter member of Musicians Local No. 46, and played with various musical groups throughout the Fox Valley." On page 4, column 1 of the 12-05-1955 issues of the Northwestern, it states he was the Union Treasurer at that time. It is unknown which groups he played with, or what instrument(s) he played. I have not yet seen his name listed as a recording artist in the liner notes of any recording.
According to Oshkosh City Directories, he had been previously employed as a draftsman at Cross, Oberlie & Christensen, and Cross & Oberlie of Neenah, WI. The 1980 Directory was the first to list him as retired.
The recordings will be listed here sometime in the future. It is doubtful they will be listed before the publication of my forthcoming book, (ca. 2028), FolkLib Index: Wisconsin Discography. However, all the recordings I know about for local school and church groups will be listed in the book.
