David E. Henkle: Token Collector
Tokens of Africa, Latin America and the West Indies

by Douglas H. Henkle, henkle@pobox.com

(last updated .05-19-2026)

This page is dedicated to my late brother David E. Henkle of Mishawaka, IN.   David E. Henkle (1937-2026), a coin collector starting when he was 10 years old, spent over 60 years of his life as a dedicated collector of tokens of Africa, Latin America and the West Indies. He self-published an over 3,000 page loose-leaf Catalog describing his collection and also every other known token for 90 countries. He continued updating pages of his Catalog until his death in May of 2026. The total number of pages is unknown to me at this time, and I have not yet found a Title page he might have made for the entire collection. A work-in-progress, this page will display his Introduction for America, and sample pages from his 348 page Catalog and 22 page Index of just the Tokens of Puerto Rico chapter. He wrote a separate Introduction for Africa.

The pages displayed are taken from the thumb drive Catalog copy he sent me in August 2021. Each page is a separate .JPG file. The format of the original edited document from which he took a screenshot of each page is also unknown at this time. For the 2021 edition of his Catalog I have, its total size is 3.25 GB comprised of 18,048 files in 780 folders, i.e., it does not exist as a single file merged together.

I created all merged together PDF documents installed on this page. When David added a new token entry to a page, the last entry on that page got pushed to the top of the next page. At times he finalized a new "edition" of a country's entries, and saved those screenshot pages in a separate dated directory. Then he began working on the next edition. Therefore, a particular token could be found on different pages depending on which edition it appeared in. He indexed tokens based on the page it appeared in a specific dated edition. I have found he created 11 different editions for one country. The 2021 thumb drive I received from him only included at most two editions for each country, even there may have been more editions. When I gain access to his laptop, I hope to find that he saved every edition he created for every country. Only the lastest dated edition I have will be installed on this page, not all editions.

Bibliography of David's books I have not seen:
Wooden money of Latin America and the West Indies by David E. Henkle, 24 p., January 1, 1995, LC: 1995-196509

Please note that this will be the only Numismatic page on this Philatelic website. As stipulated in his will, David's entire Token collection will be distributed back into the hands of other Token collectors by whatever appropriate Sale, Auction, or other process which is yet to be determined. When the method of distrubution is decided, it will publicized here.
