Cachet Display Catalog: FDC Cachetmakers Index
This page displays First Day Cover (FDC) cachets Hand Drawn and Hand Painted by
Raleigh D. Newton (Dalton) (1902-1980) of San Pedro, CA from about August 1945 to about April 1960. This page displays every Raleigh D. Newton cachet that I know about (84 FDC's and 2 WW II Events). Because these supposedly one-of-a-kind cachets first came to light in September 2021, it is doubtful that any of these covers are listed in any edition of Mellone's 1940's or 1950's Catalogs. Also, at this time it is unknown whether these cachets are "of the period" or add-ons. Unless further research turns up more copies of one or more of his FDC cachets, their current "one-of-a-kind" status does not qualify Raleigh D. Newton for listing in "First Cachets".
Earliest and Latest FDC cachets I know about: 10-27-1945 (#933) -- 4-22-1960 (#C59)
Earliest and Latest WW II Event cachets I know about: 8-14-1945 -- 9-02-1945

FIRST DAYS references for R. Newton or Raleigh D. Newton: None
The first 40 covers known generally to the FDC community were placed at eBay auction on 11-04-2021 by the eBay dealer John F. Jones. See:
What's New on this page for other cachets he has posted to eBay for sale since then.
From John F. Jones' initial lot descriptions: "This and similar covers that will be offered in weeks to come are from the estate of philatelist Kevin Seward of San Pedro, California who passed away in February, 2021. Mr. Seward, a close friend of Walter Crosby, amassed a huge collection of Crosby works including these by artist R. Newton, also of San Pedro. The inside stuffer states that they are by "Improved Crosby Naval Cover Service, ORIGINAL CROSBY COVER ALBUM MFG, P.O. BOX 602, SAN PEDRO, CALIF.". I was fortunate to become aware of these covers earlier on and was fortunately able to acquire almost the complete collection of these R. Newton Hand Painted covers. Philatelist dealer, Joel Weinstein, believes that Newton was an apprentice artist for Crosby and believes his covers are all one-of-a-kind because he has never seen any others."
Walter G. Crosby: Philatelic Cachet Specialist (With Over 400 Illustrations)"
by William H. Stroebel (1992)
From Page 3: "Crosby utilized the talents of many artists for his cachets. They included
"Joe" ?,
Cecil Klark,
C.G. Morris,
George Neumann,
C.S. Richell and
J. Enos. For cachet design he had
Dr. Frank Cole and naval personnel such as
E.O. Tauer and
? Tyson. Raleigh D. Newton was the designer when Crosby was Cachet Director at San Pedro. Crosby also designed some covers and art work."
Webmaster's note: I can't find Newton's name mentioned anywhere else in the book. The Catalog shows no hand drawn cachets by anyone. Unfortunately Stroebel does not mention here what years Crosby was "Cachet Director at San Pedro". Raleigh D. Newton's cachets displayed above run from August 1945 to April 1960, but I have no way of knowing if this period coincides with his years with Crosby or not.

-- From the: University of California: Riverside (UCR): Center for Bibliographic Studies and Research:
News-Pilot, San Pedro, California, June 15, 1932, page 4: "A cachet, designed by Raleigh D. Newton, letter carrier of the San Pedro post office, and sponsored by the San Pedro chamber of commerce, had already been placed on the covers and for several weeks they had been in readiness for the arrival of the Akron."
Webmaster's note: This newspaper story is about the U.S.S. Akron dirigible's flight over San Pedro, CA on 6-11-1932, on its flight from Sunnyvale, CA to Lakehurst, NJ (per Wikipedia). It is unknown how many of the 6,339 covers canceled that day had Raleigh D. Newton's cachet on them. The fly-over
occurred at 4:30 pm, so that was when all the covers were canceled. I found nothing on the Web about any other cachet by him, except that Google mentions and shows two Alfred E. Newman cachets possibly by him, but the Mad Magazine site they were on is gone and archive.org never backed it up.
Also from this article: "Several weeks ago the chamber of commerce announced in stamp magazines that it would sponsor a cachet commemorating the Akron’s arrival and Mr. Newton, who had formerly drawn the blimp’s Honolulu flight stamp, was asked to plan the design. Bearing a sketch of the Akron and the Patoka as well as several airplanes and the lighthouse at the end of the breakwater, the cachet has been declared by stamp collectors to be one of the finest ever made, according to Captain C. P. Wright, San Pedro postmaster."
Webmaster's note: The following is the only one I can find of the covers canceled that day. The above description is close to what is depicted on this cachet, but it does not include "a sketch of the ... Patoka", so I am not positive that this is the actual Chamber of Commerce sponsored cachet by Raleigh D. Newton.
