Cachet Display Catalog: FDC Cachetmakers Index

When is a "First Day Cover" not a "First Day of Issue Cover"?

This page displays "First Day Cover" and "First Day" cancellations which were NOT applied to covers canceled on the First day of issue of any United States postage stamp. These cancels and the covers displayed here document the renaming and naming of two West Virginia towns during and just after World War II and the new Post Office dedication events that occurred there. The wording within the cancel bars of these covers was never used either before or after these dates for any other purpose by the USPOD or the USPS. I am displaying these covers here because they are often mistaken for "First day of issue" First Day Covers (FDC) due to the misleading wording in the cancels.

This page is indebted to the late M. Douglas Parks, the only collector I know of who published a detailed list of these cachets. His 1986 article with his table list: "April 15, 1942, MacArthur (VA) First Day Covers" provided the initial format of this page and his assigned numbers are used here.

Hollywood, WV was renamed MacArthur, WV on 4-15-1942 in honor of General Douglas MacArthur, (1880-1964), a general of the United States Army.
