Cachet Display Catalog: FDC Cachetmakers Index
This page displays photographs of 225 U.S. First Day Cover (FDC) Cachetmakers. Most of these photos appeared in issues of
FIRST DAYS, the Journal of the
American First Day Cover Society (AFDCS). Each entry includes the year the photo appeared, or the year the photo was taken. "(yy?)" indicates an old photo with no known information as to when it was taken. Only people who have produced at least one cachet for a specific new U.S. issue will be listed. Please write if you have a ".JPG" scan of an unlisted FDC Cachetmaker, or a better photo than the one displayed here. If known, include the exact source of the photo, periodical name, issue number, page number, and the year the photo was taken. That information is noted in the filename of each photo. All photos are from First Days unless noted otherwise.
A secondary source of photos is
"The Blue Book of Philately: Who`s Who in the Stamp World" (1935)
by Harry L. Lindquist. I have been unable to find an affordable copy of the
1938 edition.
A special thanks go to Clark Heins, whose long running column, "Cachet Mystery Corner", displayed many Collector, Servicer and
Cachetmaker photos from his collection gathered from old philatelic magazines and newspapers and other unknown sources. His first photo, of David H. Davenport, appeared in his [#152, 26(3), 5-6/1981, p. 372-374] column.
An unanticipated side-effect of searching through back issues is that many more articles about these Cachetmakers have been indexed on the
Birthdays page.
For the foundation story of our Society, you should read:
"It Began With a Question: The Birth & Rapid Growth of the AFDCS Sixty Years Ago" by Gerald H. Strauss [#421, 60(2), 3-4/2015, p. 17-20]. Richard Bohn (#1Ch) (President of FIPEX),
Leo August (#2Ch), Norman H. Lee (#4Ch, LM #1), Strauss (#10ch), and two other Board members of FIPEX (the 1956 international philatelic exhibition in New York), Prescott Holden Thorp and Jacob Glaser, are pictured in the article. Leo August, his brother Sam August, and Al Nelson, an Art Craft artist who designed the AFDCS logo (above), are the only Cachetmakers mentioned in the article.
