Cachet Display Catalog: FDC Cachetmakers Index
This page lists non-FDC Special Event Cachets that I know about, published in Erie, PA up to October 1937 by
Clarence Eugene Laird, father and historian (1861-1937), and
Eugene Clarence Laird, son and cachet designer (1896-1980), of Erie, PA. Most of the Event Cachets listed here were announced in the Laird's periodical,
"Winding Trails Magazine" (WTM) (1/1935 - 9/1937), Thanks to a visit to the
American Philatelic Research Library (APRL) in Bellefonte, PA, on June 12-13, 2023, I now have complete scans of 20 of the 24 issues of this Magazine [all except Whole Numbers 3 (Mar. 1935) and 17 (date?)]. The Lairds produced hundreds of cachets in the 1935-1937 period. A long-term Work-in-Progress, this page lists the titles of Special Event Cachets listed in the Magazine and displays those cachets I have seen. It will take quite awhile for me to list every different cachet listed in these magazines. I have found only a small number of actual covers that match the published text descriptions. None of the descriptions include a picture of the cachet described. The front cover of each issue includes a cachet design, but the issue never says which specific cover this design was made for. At the bottom of the page,
Unmatched Cachets are displayed, for which I have not yet found a matching description in the magazine.
I have merged all the .jpg scans I have taken of 20 of the 24 issues, and then converted the results into OCR Searchable documents. Complete PDFs of 20 issues an be viewed at:
"Winding Trails Magazine" (WTM) by Clarence and Eugene Laird (1/1935 - 9/1937)

Subject for this page: Doug Henkle missing Laird Special Event Cachets
(an email with any other subject or with any other graphical format will be ignored IF it has an attachment)
I have yet to see any Cachet produced by the Lairds that includes the Cachet Number they assigned in Winding Trails Magazine. I can only assume the Numbers were for their personal record keeping. I cannot determine any other purpose for which they served. All proposed cancellation dates are listed in "yyyy-mm-dd" format, in case there is ever any need to sort them in date order. After Clarence passed away on 10-14-1937, Eugene felt obligated to finish the creation and servicing of their set of 16
#799-802 Territorial First Day cachets. It is likely that Event cachets announced with a cancellation date after this were never created or serviced.
(new) # = the re-assigned Cachet number which I did because I found more than one different description with the same Laird Cachet No. I needed to do this because I use these Numbers for unique HTML "anchor tags", so that each description can be referred to individually, e.g.:

As stated on page 4 of Winding Trails Magazine, Jan. 1935, Vol. 1 No. 1, "After several issues of
Laird's Stamp Bulletin ... we submit to collector-hobbyists the first issue of the successor of the Bulletin -- Winding Trails Magazine." I have not seen any copy of any Bulletin from 1934 and before. The APRL doesn't have any of them. Therefore, it is likely that there may be pre-1935 Laird assigned Cachet Numbers and serviced Event Cachets that cannot be listed on this page because they were announced in the previous unseen periodical.
Special Event Cachets are listed in the order they were first announced:
Some Cachets were described in more that one issue.
The Series titles that appear below, in bold, are printed in the Magazine as headers for the New Cachet
announcements that follow.

- 1937-01-30 -- Cachet #181 -- (HAC) 75th anniversary of the Launching of the U.S.S. Monitor at Greenpoint, Long Island on 1-30-1862 -- (eBay)
This shows that the design on the magazine cover (WTM #18, February 1937, p. 37, in red) may not exactly match the cachet (in blue) that was printed and serviced. The photo borders and the Captions under the photo don't match either.

- 1937-02-08 -- Cachet #182 -- (HAC) 75th anniversary of the capture of Roanoke, NC on 2-08-1862.

- 1937-02-10 -- Cachet #183 -- (HAC) 75th anniversary of the destruction of the Confederate fleet by the Union fleet near Elizabeth City, NJ on 2-10-1862.

WTM #19, March 1937, p. 76
This was the first time the forthcoming U.S. Scott #799-802 proposed designs were listed and described. They were also listed in every issue up to the final September 1937 #24 issue. The First Day dates were never published in the Magazine because the USPOD did not announce those dates until after the final issue was mailed out to subscribers. The final designs of the stamps was also unknown in time for the last issue. The Lairds were misinformed about what the designs might be. Compare the following to the actual stamps issued:
WTM #24, September 1937, p. 36 -- "According to latest reports, a reproduction of the painting of William H. Seward signing the Treaty of Purchase, by Emanuel Leutze, will be placed on the Alaska stamp; a view of the Governor's Palace, at San Juan, will appear on the Puerto Rico stamp, while the Harbor of St. Thomas will be shown on the stamp for the Virgin Islands."
#800 pictures Mt. McKinley
#801 pictures the Fort but the Palace is obscured by trees
#802 pictures the harbor of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas -- the only accurate report
#Unmatched Cachets, for which I have not yet found a matching description in the magazine.
