Steve began playing the accordion when he was ten years old. In the mid fifties he formed his first band. In 1957, while stationed in Germany with the U.S. Air Force, Steve played in a band for weekend dances at the base service club. It was there, at a dance, that he met and later married his German born wife, Doris. That was also when he became so fond of Oktober Fest music. Polkas and waltzes were his favorites.
In 1964, out of the service and back in Oshkosh, WI, he organized a band and played for many weddings and church picnics. Around that time, Steve and his wife, joined the German American Club. They attended dances where, always, a German band from the Milwaukee area would provide the music. He became inspired and wanted to have that ethnic style for his band.
Today, in addition to entertaining at Oktober Fests, Polka Fests, Picnics and Anniversaries, the band presents Polkas "A Class Act". Using two very active and highly experienced dance couples, from the [city ] and New London, WI areas, we together perform programs for elementary school children. The dancers show and explain the polka dance, and the band plays polkas while the physical education teachers in the schools actually teach the children the polka steps.
Steve was inducted into the WISCONSIN POLKA HALL OF FAME in November 2000. The Achievement Award was presented to him.
Members of the band include: Dan "Boots" Meyer from Neenah, WI on tenor, alto saxophone and clarinet, Marty Kees also from Neenah WI on bass guitar, tuba, vocalizing and yodeling some of those German Favorites and Marty's Son, Vince Kees, vocals and drums. Steve "Gunner" Guenther from Oshkosh, WI playing guitar and singing your favorites. Steve Young, playing the lead on his accordion, also vocalizes and does the announcing for the band. They are members of the Wisconsin Polka Hall of Fame, Inc. and The Wisconsin Polka Boosters, Inc. Together, their musical sound, solid beat, blend, harmony and variety, including Country, Latin and Big Band, makes the band one of the most popular in the area. We think you will agree, once you hear and see the Steve Young Band.
